... or Stink bros?

I couldn't resist this "limited" boxed set with three more plague marines. I love the new plague marines, and despite knowing that a proper plastic boxed set is on the horizon, and despite having about 50 old and semi-old metal plague marines, these were a must buy. Prize-wise they are 25 quid (or 300 Swedish Krona) for three ordinary plastic figures which is a bit steep. But who cares, money will be worthless when the Trumpocalypse comes anyway.

They come in this snazzy box. Can I please have this as a giant poster, pretty please with sugar on top?

The first thing you see when you open the box is a booklet with the same illustration on.

There are actually two booklets. One is the designer's notes and the other is the building instructions.

...underneath the booklets is a flap that lifts up to reveal some art cards.

All feature art by John Blance, but none is actually of any of the models in this box.

Ok, a quick break here, I have to get something off my chest. I'm a big fan of John Blanche's visions and style, but some of his art is actually very bad. I like the plague marine and the pox walker on the art cards above, they are quite evocative and disturbing. If you look closer though, you realise John's method of colouring his art is just drawing some swathes of water colours in the general area he wants colour, hoping most of it will be inside the lines he drew. One is actually of Mortarion, the great Death Guard primarch, but you couldn't tell if the picture didn't have the caption. I stared at the picture for like five minutes without being able to tell where his head is. I suppose it's a case of the Emperor's new clothes syndrome, nobody dares criticise John Blanche at GW and just prints whatever he produces.

Back to the box though, are there actually any minis inside?

Muddy Waters -- Modelmates Weathering Wash review

Hi gang!

The Model Railroad hobby is a bit strange to be honest (and I've been a part of it so I'm not bashing somebody elses hobby BTW), but we can still learn a lot from them. The thing is that model railroaders spend a lot of time and money on building very realistic backdrops for their trains, yet most want their trains pristine and unweathered. So Model Railroad rolling stock (that's locos, wagons, etc.) are sold prepainted and in perfect shape. This goes for figures too, they are prepainted but not shaded. Again, I'm not bashing someones hobby, Model Railroaders are often collectors too (unlike Wargamers which are hoarders) and display their trains in special cabinets.

Case in point. Lovely scenery, squeeky clean locomotive and lorry.

But not all Model Railroaders are collectors, and there are lots of tips and tricks for weathering locomotives. Usually they are of the DIY kind, but there are also some special products available, like the weathering sprays from Model Mates. Since I live in Sweden I haven't been able to order one of those, but I recently discovered that they are also available in regular paint pots. Instead of trawling Model Railroad shops you can steer your web browser to Great Escape Games that stocks them.

Delivery was swift and secure with the jars of weathering liquids in separate ziplock bags inside the package in case of leaks (there were none). The Weathering Liquids functions like a wash, but are water soluble after they have dried. The idea is you take your spanking brand new boxcar, diesel engine or whatever you want to weather, and slather the liquid on it. When it has dried you remove as much or as little you want with a cotton bud, damp cloth or brush. If you remove too much you can always apply some more. I think it will look very nice as grime and dirt on tanks for instance. However, I plan to use it to Nurgle-ise a lot of figures for Warhammer 40k, hence my choice of Moss Green...

As I didn't have any vehicles ready for weathering, I took a figure to test it on instead. I had this 80's classic Nurgle Chaos Warrior I bought on eBay. While not a bad paint job per se, it was a bit too clean for Nurgle really.

Ready for action... love that murky greenish colour of the weathering liquid.

Weathering liquid applied and still a bit wet, hence the glossiness. It dries matt.

Most of it wiped off with a damp brush. Notice how it leaves some grime and stain on the original surface.

I tried the Rusty Red on the sword as well, but I didn't like the effect. Probably the sword is too flat and silvery to retain much of the effect. I suspect it will work much better on a tank with all those rivets and panel lines.

At £4.50 it costs about the same as the new big cans of GW washes, although it only contains 18ml. However the effect is not the same as regular washes and I find that they are well worth the price and will definitely order some of the other colours.

Hastur, Hastur, Halteres...

It was birthday around two weeks ago, and those of my co-workers that share my miniature addiction bought me a present! Oh goody!

I've always been fond of Nurgle and I had been oogling the new Nurgle Plague Drones for some time, which my co-workers noticed. So they bought me a box of mutated bloated giant flies carrying Plaguebearers on their back. Nice.

Just some WIP shots of things I'm working on right now... I'm all over the place it seems!

Started on the first section of Crusader late war British.

Three finished. Was a while since I painted eyes...

 

Basecoated and did some colour modulation on the SdKfz 222 in front of the telly.

Additional bits from the Tamiya kit. Just decals, chipping, pigments and painting the commander left to do!

I also started painting Nurgle plaguebearers. Love these figures!

A plague on both your houses!

Anyone who's into Warhammer would recognise these figures for they really are, Chaos Warriors, or Chosen of Nurgle to be more precis. Even though Avatars of War claim to have their own game I doubt anyone is using these figures for anything else than Warhammer. A quick look on their page also reveals that they have character figures for War (Khorne), Pestilence (Nurgle) and Torment (Slaanesh). They also have some Marauder characters and a lot of Dwarf, Elf, Daemon, Undead, Orc and Human characters.

Chosen Champion of Nurgle

As I wrote earlier I couldn't resist buying the Chosen Chaos Marine champion from GW. It's a new plastic model, done in the same style as the ones included in the Dark Vengeance starter box.

I did finish this a while ago but haven't had the time to post photos of him. More after the break.

No, I'm not doing figures for Romeo and Juliet despite the quote being from that play. I just love the play and the line and thought it fitting. (But now that I think about it it would be cool to have Romeo and Juliet figures in Tilean clothes for Warhammer).

As I just finished the three carriers I was keen on doing something different to avoid another WW2 burnout again, and a trip to my FLGS saw me come back with this Chosen Chaos Space Marine Champion.

And now for something completely different

I've been having a couple of games of Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition which have rekindled my interest in Warhammer. At the same time as I'm revamping my dwarf army (which includes figures from 2nd edition right up to the current) I'm also enjoying a guilty side pleasure painting something very different.

Holy Flying Failcast, Batman!

I took advantage of Maelstrom's stock clearance sale and ordered a box of Chaos Marine Raptors for Warhammer 40k. This is part of slow long-term project of fielding lots and lots of nurgly DeathGuard. I don't really play 40k anymore but I have too much time and love invested in my different armies to let them go. Besides, soon my sons will start playing, so I will need the armies then.

When I ordered I had no idea if this was old stock, meaning that the models were metal, or the new Finecast versions. As it turned out it was Finecast.  As I intend to convert the figures extensively Finecast should be easier to work with than metal. I have heard some very negative opinions on Finecast though, so it was with a little bit of dread I opened the box.

Det är konstigt när man nyss avslutat ett projekt. Man har stressat, blödit, försummat nära och kära, förbannat sin dumhet för att man inte började tidigare eller för att man beställt mer än man har tid och ork att slutföra (seriöst: FEM hus och en bondgård, vad tänkte jag med?) eller för att man har för hög ambitionsnivå (se nämnda bondgård). Sen när det är över så känns det tomt. Vad ska jag göra nu framför TV:n när SWMBO somnat i soffan? Jo då är det dags att ta tag i alla de andra projekten som man startat upp men som legat vilande medan man gjorde klart Det Stora Viktiga projektet.

Låt se... vad har vi jag att välja på? För det första är det lite kvar från Barbarossa-projektet som antingen inte behövdes den här gången eller som jag rationaliserade bort tidigare i processen. Dessutom har jag ett par stridsvagnar på väg från Frankrike som ska bli kul att bygga -- jag tycker ju det är kul att bygga modeller, det är målandet som jag fastnar på. Det är en fastbuild-sats från Pegasus med en KV1 modell 1940 och en KV2 modell 1939. KV2-an skulle jag ju faktiskt kunna måla i vinterkamo och använda till vinterkriget, den togs fram speciellt för att råda bot på finnarnas sega stockbunkrar och var beväpnad med en 152mm haubits.

Sen har vi ju mina Nurgle marines till 40k. Där har vi hur mycket som helst att göra, men som kan sammanfattas i några olika punkter.

• Göra klart och reparera min Nurgle-dread. Den är tungt konverterad och har tryckknappar i midjan och armarna, dessa ska bytas ut mot magneter. Sen behövs det final highlight på kroppen och lite rost och sot på vapnen, plus att basen behöver göras klart.
• Konstruera en någorlunda balancerad och inte alltför sugig armélista.
• Organisera och dela in figurerna i squads för målning, enligt ovanstående lista.
• Måla varje squad... oeerr... det är när jag kommer hit i planeringen som min blick börjar glasas över och jag gör något annat istället.

Som ni kanske anat så står ju andra världskriget högt bland mina intressen, och där har jag ju flera andra projekt än just Barbarossa på gång. Exempelvis började jag ju spela Platoon Forward med en amerikansk pluton. Det rycker lite i tarmen att återstarta den solokampanjen och bygga Shermans och pansarbilar. Jag har en bepansrad jeep (jodå, det fanns såna) som har legat halvfärdig på målarbordet i några månader och blängt hoppfullt på mig. Men framför allt är jag sugen på att köpa en M20 pansarbil, Italeri har en modell som fått bra betyg och som man kan välja att bygga med förenklat underreda så att den blir stadigare, vilket är bra för oss figurspelare.

Oooh! Shiny!

Men snart kommer också IABSM3, vilket verkar bli en superrelease. Richard Clarke har lärt sig en hel del om regelskrivning sedan första utgåvan för 10 år sedan. Reglerna är sig lika, förutom bättre och mer dynamiska regler för ledare och förenklade artilleriregler, men nu med mer exempel och tydligare formuleringar. Rich har också tagit fram en generisk lek med kort så man slipper klippa och klistra egna plus ett set med tokens anpassade för reglerna. Kort sagt det bästa sedan färdigskivat bröd. Eftersom det också ska innehålla lite specialregler för grupper av stridsvagnar börjar jag snegla lite på den där lådan med T34-or i 6mm som legat omålade i ett år. Östfronten lockar återigen.

Oooh, tiny!

På tal om 6mm så vill Jocke fortsätta spela ökenkriget vilket alltid är trevligt, men då behöver jag mer britter. Jag har utarbetat en inköpsplan på vad jag behöver, problemet är väl att sen ska skiten målas också. Bugger, varför ska man sova egentligen?

Praise father Nurgle

Målade klart min Nurgle Champion till 40k. Jag har ju precis avslutat mitt sovjetiska WW2-projekt (och i tid!) så jag va lite rådvill vad jag skulle måla, så jag tog helt sonika närmaste figur och började.

Figuren är tänkt att vara en medlem av Deathguard och jag ville att rustningen skulle visa spår av det. Tidigare när jag målat mina plaguemarines har jag bara slaskat på med washer och stänkt ner dem med rödbrunt och slemgrönt. Nu ville jag dessutom måla de olika detaljerna på figuren.

Hans "personal icon", d.v.s. standarpolen på ryggen är den enda konverteringen.

Deathguard hade -- enligt vad jag kan utröna -- vita eller benvita rustningar med grön trim. Figuren var från början sprayad med lite olika nyanser av brunt och grönt och washad med Devland Mud. Jag kom på att det skulle kunna bli en bra grund, och började måla vitt på rustningens stora ytor. Jag lade på tunna lager i vertikala streck och lät den underliggande färgen lysa igenom. Jag tänkte mig att det skulle likna smutsränderna som blir på exempelvis fordon som stått ute i väder och vind. Resultatet blev okej, men jag tyckte det blev för vitt på vissa ställen. Mer Devlan Mud var lösningen.

Även ryggsäckenfick samma behandling.

Kanterna på rustningen målades i mörkgrönt och highlightades upp till ljusare färger. Jag var lite frestad att måla "chipping", d.v.s. accentuera yttersta kanterna med metall för att simulera avskavd färg, men jag tror det skulle bli för plottrigt. En del detaljer som t.ex. hornet i pannan målades mer vitt än resten. De utväxter och sår som rustningen har målade jag i vanlig hudfärg och washade med rött för att få en mer "köttig" look. Boltern blev målad i grönt och metall och med lite rostfläckar, som även figurens svärd och standar fick.

Bonde söker fru?

Jag blev rätt nöjd med resultatet även om penselstrecken blev lite tjocka på vissa ställen. Jag kommer nog att göra åtminstone ett par squads i det här färgschemat till min Chaos Marine-armé, men jag vet inte om jag orkar måla alla figurer så här. Vi får se, först måste jag sätta ihop en bra lista så jag vet vad jag ska måla. Jag fick Codexet häromdagen och sitter och funderar. En del taktikartiklar på nätet hävdar att Chaos Marine-codexet är rejält nerfat jämfört med tidigare, och jag märker det när jag försöker anpassa mina befintliga figurer till codexet, det är mycket som har försvunnit eller blivit mycket sämre.

Men det har ju aldrig hindrat mig förut, och det kommer säkert en ny version av codexet innan jag målat klart armén...
