Champion of the Force

By chance I happened to participate in a local game night tournament of Imperial Assault. I had only played the game with my kids previously and wanted to try it for real. At the last minute I threw a list together consisting of the Royal Guard Champion and two pairs of Royal Guard (one elite). They are all hard hitting close combat troops with the Royal Guard figures able to support each other when defending. I had five points left so I added an elite Probe Droid for some ranged support. Completely oblivious how command cards worked I selected all cards that had the keywords "brawler" and "guardian" as the Royal Guard and the Champion are both.

The furious six in all their unpainted glory...
At first I was going to take as many painted figures as possible but that would have been a rebel list with many different characters and probably very hard to play. As it was my first proper game I thought it would be better to keep things simple.

We were only four people at the game night so I was definitely going to get some loot as usually FFG provides stuff for the eight best players as well as prices for the winner and runner up. I ended up winning both my games and was declared overall winner to my astonishment. Both my opponents were great chaps (I've played against them in X-wing a couple of times before). The dice and the Force were with me but it seems that my list was very competitive and effective. Am I a power gamer? Who knew?

Loot, precious loot! Alternate art cards, acrylic tokens, a dice bag and a medal!
I guess I have to move my winning team forward in the painting queue now. I will definitely double my efforts at painting the Imperial Assault figures now as the game is very good and the skirmish format turned out to be just as fun as the campaign mode.

The new Stormtrooper leader Kayn Somos. This model had virtually no mold lines at all.
I also picked up Kayn Somos, one of the latest figures released. He's a Stormtrooper officer and gave me lots of problems in my first game. I'm looking forward to the rest of the new releases which includes C-3P0 and R2-D2 among others.

Luke Skywalker, wanted for crimes against the Empire.
Last but not least I have finished Luke Skywalker as another of those low hanging fruits I wrote about in my last post.

Pew, pew, pew!
May the Force be with You.

  1. Isn't he a little short for a stormtrooper?

  2. The figures are pretty nice looking. I like the way they sculpted the folds on those robes. Nicely done on Luke!

    1. Yeah, they are good sculpts for mere boardgame pieces. The monopose can be a bit boring, but at least all the characters are very individual.

  3. Congratulations Leif
I think you'll have to guide us through a game (and I must make another saving throw against corruption or I will buy a box...)

    1. I will gladly corrupt... I mean introduce you lot to the game.

    2. I feel that I may be in trouble too. The "but I'll soon get Dungeon Saga" argument is wearing thin against the forces of "I want the shiny stuff!"

    3. I just gave you permission to switch your home guard pledge to Imperial Assault, didn't I?

Dungeon Saga does not come into it. And yes, it is well shiny.
      :-)

    4. Oh, well then, that will let me point Koen to you when he nags me about Home Guard. That alone is worth the price of the box!

    5. He'll just nag you about Imperial Assault instead :-)

  4. Congratulations, and that is some sweet loot, particularly the metal! I think that if the base game were a little cheaper this would be even more popular than it is... just a bit too much for a guiltless buy in my opinion.

    1. Yes. It is steep. If I hadn't wanted it for playing the campaign mode with my kids too I couldn't have justified buying it.
